A μ-oxo diiron complex of a new binucleating tetrapyridyl ligand.
The prepn. of the hexadentate ligand 2,11-bis-{\{}N,N-[bis-(2-methylpyridyl)amino]methyl{\}}benzo[c]phenanthrene (L) (designed to hold and stabilize a ($μ$-oxo)diiron(III) unit) and [Fe2O(L)(mpdp)](NO3)2 (mpdp = 1,3-benzenedipropionate dianion) are described. The Fe compd. was characterized by several physicochem. techniques: UV-visible spectroscopy, magnetism, electrochem. and mass spectrometry, the latter technique confirming the binuclear (as opposed to tetranuclear) nature of the compd.
