Method of producing formic acid by electrocatalytic reduction in the gaseous phase of the CO2 using a gas-diffusion cathode.
The invention concerns a method of producing formic acid from carbon dioxide and water by electroredn. of the CO2 in the gaseous phase. The method uses electrochem. cells of which the cathode consists of a gas-diffusion electrode of which the active layer contains a transition metal-based mol. complex electrodeposited in the form of a metal-metal bond polymer and catalyzing the reaction selectively to formic acid. The resulting formic acid is then sepd. from the residual CO2 by crystn., the CO2 being recycled to the electrochem. cell. [on SciFinder(R)]
