Electropolymerizable surfactant for dispersing carbon nanotubes.

The invention concerns an aq. compn. comprising carbon nanotubes and a surfactant, characterized in that the carbon nanotubes are single-wall hydrophobic nanotubes and in that the surfactant is chosen among electropolymerizable surfactant monomers of X-Y-Z (X = electropolymerizable moiety selected from pyrrole, acetylene, phenol, aniline, thiophene, carbazole, indole, and azulene; Y = hydrophobic hydrocarbon chain; and Z = polar group selected from quaternary ammonium salts, alkylphosphonates, and sulfonates). The invention also relates to a method for the prepn. of an aq. compn. as described above, comprising the following steps: (i) solubilization of the surfactant monomer (ii) addn. of the single-wall carbon nanotubes to the aq. soln. comprising the surfactant monomer, (iii) sonication of the mixt. to form a soln., and, optionally, (iv) addn. of a protein. The aq. compn. of surfactant monomers and carbon nanotubes is then electropolymd. on a material to prep. a material coated with the surfactant polymer and carbon nanotubes. Biosensor electrodes were prepd. by electropolymn. of aq. solns. contg. (11-pyrrol-1-ylundecyl)triethylammonium tetrafluoroborate (prepn. given), single-wall carbon nanotubes, and glucose oxidase or tyrosinase. The sensors had good reproducibility and had faster response times than sensors lacking the carbon nanotubes. [on SciFinder(R)]
